One thing that has always fascinated me in life is mythology. I've been exploring the recorded mythology of every culture that has survived to present-day for years. Fables and sagas of deities, their heroes, villains, and magic-wielding figures and the battles tying them all together. The stories along are enough to inspire awe and devotion. But myths tell us so much more about the real world than they do about the fantastical and supernatural beliefs of different cultures.
The myths and legends of a particular culture typically exemplify the values and aspirations of those people. This is especially true with stories of deities, the figures idolised and revered in these stories have distinct personalities and values prized and imitated by the people devoted to them.
It's no surprise then that, with my reverence for mythical and legendary stories, that a mythical island became the setting for my current work. I've also incorporated other mythical figures into my story, manipulating their stories to align with the history of the story’s civilisation.
Without giving too much away, I've taken myths from a few different cultures around the world and dropped them into a mythical setting. I also created a history for this world to explain the conglomeration of these cultures together in one place. It's proving and interesting and complex world for the characters to acclimate to, proving rich interactions and conflicts.
I've got more story ideas from mythology that I want to explore in the future, drawing inspiration from the awe and curiosity those stories elicit in me. I hope I can inspire just as much excitement and wonder from my future readers that I get from learning these tales of fantastical and religious beings and places.
